In Microsoft’s upcoming Mash-It-Up competition, participating teams compete against one another to create the most compelling mash-up in 24 hours using Microsoft’s Popfly™ technology.

The winning team stands to win the top prize of a trip to Microsoft’s Redmond campus + a 3-month student internship with Microsoft Singapore.

Sounds like it’s just another competition? But wait, there’s more! There is, in fact, a twist to the plot.

This competition has a focus on creativity and interaction, thus encouraging the participants to collaborate between teams. This literally forces them to get out of their box to interact with other teams to collaborate and exchange information from each others mash-up blocks. In doing so, the teams that work more together stand to gain more points! The more of other teams’ blocks that you use in your mash-up and the more teams that use your blocks, the more points you will get.

This concept promotes discussion and sharing of ideas between participants, inspiring them to think unconventionally. This is an assurance that everybody stands to gain fresh ideas and perspectives to take home with them, and nobody leaves empty handed!

The day is finally here for our first ever mobile developer community event. MobFest was hatched by a group of people (Neng Giin Yap, Serene Tan, Ruiwen Chua, Will Lee, Peter Du Senyao and myself) passionate about the mobile industry and the local entrepreneurship scene.

The event t ook a couple of weeks to brainstorm and put together and after lots of support from the community, we have managed to amass a good variety of topics.

Event Details:

Date: Tonight!

Location: Microsoft Singapore, One Marina Boulevard Level 22, One Marina Boulevard

Time: 7.00pm – 10.00pm

Topics that will be discussed tonight include:

1) Presentation by Gothere.sg team
Gothere.sg will be presenting some cool stuff that they’ve been working on.. Be the first to see it (other than their own company folks)

2) Building applications across different mobile platforms by Fonemesh.com Caleb Kow (http://www.fonemesh.com/)
Caleb is one of the co-founders of Fonemesh, a Singapore and California based startup which is building software to allow mobile phones to communicate with each other directly in high speed without any configuration. Prior to Fonemesh, Caleb managed data center operations and telecommunications investments for a US based venture capital holding company. Items to be touched upon during MobFest would be some experiences with building applications across different mobile platforms, as well as the state of current open source mobile development versus proprietary platforms.

3) OpenMoko
[Sorry couldn't get the speaker =(]. There will be about 3 openmoko handsets in this event! You can touch them, hold them, rub them, programme them (hopefully ^_^)

4) Invitation to Singapore Android Developers’ Community (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=54219346370) cum Getting Started with Android by Sean Sullivan
I really love my Android, so I decided to form a Singapore Android Developers’ group to gather people to share application ideas and form groups to create applications to this growing (rapidly) platform. And by chance, I happened to meet Mr Sean Sullivan, a Senior Software Engineer and Consultant from the US who is here in Singapore next week for the OSSPAC (http://www.osspac.com/), and he will be here to speak to you about how can you Get Started with Android (http://www.osspac.com/schedule-sessions/sessions/#session48).

5) MoSync – Automated mobile application porting (http://mosync.com)
Use the MoSync development platform to develop mobile applications for multiple mobile platforms. Deploy applications for the J2ME, Symbian and Windows Mobile platforms with just a single application code base. Reach a wider audience with your applications without the hassle of porting.

6) CocoaHeads Singapore & iPhone Development – Eric Dunivant
Brief introduction of the Mac development club here in Singapore & what you need to know to get started as an iPhone Developer.

7) Human Network Labs (HNL) – The Internet of Things. The Merging of Two Worlds (virtual and real worlds) – Yiping Goh (www.humannetworklabs.com)

-> Different ways to monetize maps were also discussed for businesses who have their application built using Google Maps API.

-> For designers wanting to render their maps in 3D with funky outlays, 3D flash google maps with flash re-coloring was talked about.

Patrick then took the stage and shed light on some of the following technologies:

HTML 5: With browser functionalities evolving rapidly, the new version of the web language that features a combination of HTML and XHTML supports rich applications and specifies scripting API’s. We believe that some of the elements introduced by HTML5 are game-changing and these include the canvas and video tags as well as the geo-location API’s. It remains to be seen how Flash and Silverlight will react once HTML5 becomes a mainstream technology, but it sure is an exciting time to be a web developer.

-> Video: With Firefox 3.5 and other browsers encouraging more open media standards, HTML 5 paves the way for open video that enables web developers to build interfaces consistent to the web site. The <video> tag is as simple as using <img> tags for images.

-> Canvas: brings sophisticated graphics without downloading any proprietary plugins. It allows drawing and animation within your browser, which currently can be done only in a desktop app or a flash app.

-> Geolocation API used by Google Latitude will enable users to access location information via a browser (If the user chooses to share) http://3liz.org/geolocation/

Friend Connect
With most of the web sites wanting to go “social”, Google’s FriendConnect enables engagement of the community through usage of Google, Yahoo, Twitter, AOL, Orkut and Plaxo accounts. The Huffington Post has an excellent illustration which showcases the power and simplcity of Google FriendConnect, by allowing users to share results on your profile and send it to friends.

Google Wave – The New Buzzword

This was one of the impromptu features of the event, and probably was the most talked about technology at Google Hackathon Singapore 2009. The live demo left people clamouring for a piece of the action (by way of asking for preview Google Wave accounts) but this was not to be. Google Wave looks like it has a legion of fans already, and the potential that it has to kick-start a new wave (excuse the pun) of web applications is immense.

After which, it was Hacking time.

With the array of technologies available to developers, it was only a matter of time before clever hackers brought ideas to life. And these were promptly showcased after a few hours of coding, when the eager developers demo-ed their respective apps. Thomas Edison’s observation that genius was 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration was put to the test as developers crunched out awesome apps in the space of a few hours. A voting process was set in place and the following apps were declared winners in descending order.

Thindtodoinsg – a web application to know the hot spots in Singapore. This used the Google Maps API along with Friendconnect to engage more people in sharing their favourite locations in Singapore.

In short, we had a total blast and we hope you had fun too
